Issue 1 of Décor magazine from the École des Arts Décoratifs-PSL.
Produced by the École des Arts Décoratifs PSL, Décor is an annual magazine dedicated to major questions and upheavals that call for a reconfiguration of our contemporary environment. Emerging creators and established artists come together, adopting complementary perspectives from a wide range of artistic fields, including design, fashion and textiles, graphic arts, visual arts, space and image, as well as literature, performing arts, and the social sciences.
Addressing the notion of “decor” implies at least two assumptions: on the one hand, that modern criticism of ornamentation and the decorative has not eradicated decor; and on the other hand, that the playful and sometimes cynical rehabilitation of decoration in postmodernity is insufficient to account for contemporary decor. Decor remains at work, both when we claim to have moved beyond it and when we cover it up with decorative. The aim, therefore, is to understand this notion in a sense that goes beyond fictional decor, extending its designation to the entirety of the everyday environment, and to show how decor profoundly shapes the very organization of reality in its aesthetic, social, and political dimensions.
