Claire Vaudey, Enclosed space, green

2024

Tempera and silkscreen in tempera on Arches paper mounted on Dibond

31 7/8 x 39 3/8 inch

In the “Jardins Clos” (Hortus Conclusus) series, Claire Vaudey draws her inspiration more specifically from the Annunciations of the Italian Renaissance. As this particular space represents both Eden and the Virgin's womb, it is always situated in the background of the scene depicted. The result is a play on the construction of space, the interweaving of exterior and interior. These spaces are built up on the surface of the paper through the interplay of lines, geometry and more organic forms, to which are added the effects of matter introduced by the screen-printing technique. Approached as a pictorial action, that of gesture, weft and error, it offers a possible breakthrough in the artist's highly established working protocol.
