For the artist, the idea of the garden becomes a motif around which she rambles. In her Jardin des pierres [Garden of stones] series, Claire Vaudey pays tribute to filmmaker Derek Jarman, who, suffering from AIDS and knowing he was doomed, settled on the English coast and created a singular garden he named Prospect Cottage. Inspired by Japanese gardens, it was conceived as a refuge, combining nature, objects and gleaned stones to create a moving atmosphere that echoes the cycle of life. In this series, the artist uses restrained and sometimes dissonant color ranges, giving the compositions a sense of heaviness and seeking a balance between light and shadow.
