David Kowalski
David Kowalski, born in 1979, lives and works in Dortmund (Germany). There is an uncanny stillness to self-taught artist David Kowalski’s paintings. In his signature muted tones and matte finish, the painter meditates and fantasizes on a possible and surreal other world. In order to express the slowing down of time, he reduces contrast and heightens the mysterious quality to his deserted internal spaces by painting light in many layers over a period of weeks or months. Fascinated with empty rooms, Kowalski imbues intrigue to his images with a nod to early black-and-white cinema, creating delicate and intimate object-paintings that propose hazy narratives to be pondered on but never told.

Letters from Utopia - duo show de David Kowalski et Marie Passa
The exhibition Letters from Utopia brings together the work of Marie Passa, a photographer who claims the action of time in her creation, and David Kowalski, a painter in search of timelessness whose images are disturbing because of their photographic aspect. Both work in shades of grey and depict empty interiors not devoid of a form of presence. They create mysterious and disturbing images tinged with melancholy. While Marie Passa is interested in utopias that have been achieved and abandoned by man, David Kowalski's utopia suggests a near future where nature reclaims its rights.
