Claire Vaudey’s works revolve around the theme of the garden. While she was initially inspired by the background settings in Italian Renaissance Annunciations, she has since moved away from that source, drawing instead on the atmosphere of Derek Jarman’s garden, Prospect Cottage, and focusing her gaze on the interior space, almost monastic in nature, echoing Abdellah Taïa’s novel Le Bastion des larmes (The Bastion of Tears) (2024) or Peter Halley’s prison series. The result is a play on the construction of space and the interweaving of interior and exterior, which manifests on paper through geometric lines suggesting architectural and mineral forms, enriched by textural effects created by the screen-printing technique enhancing the drawing previously executed in tempera. The artist uses limited and dissonant color palettes, creating within her compositions a sense of tension and a fragile balance between shadow and light.

For this exhibition, Claire Vaudey will unveil new works, including her new series, Jachère, as well as a collection of models that form the basis of her drawing practice, allowing viewers to step into the heart of her creative process.
