Arnaud Théval's latest work on the prison world, in the form of an illustrated survey of the animal presence in prisons. With texts by Arnaud Théval, Alain Kerlan and Djoheur Zerouki.
“Contrary to this supposed exclusion in principle, it must be said that animals are present everywhere in prison. In the world of the inmates, but also in that of their guards, and even in the world they share. It's there in everyone's heads, in their imaginations, in the memories and lives that are told or kept silent.” — Arnaud Théval
Arnaud Théval's work, influenced by anthropology and political philosophy, has focused on the prison world since 2011. This latest work, the conclusion of a long cycle, was conceived from a survey of the animal presence in prisons, whether real, drawn, written or imagined.
Built around a varied iconographic corpus, from embroidered patches to the artist's own photographs and drawings, this book questions notions of animality and confinement, and what they say about relationships between people.
