Born in Dresden in 1932, Gerhard Richter studied at the art school of his home town. In 1961 he fled East Germany and settled in Düsseldorf, where he continued his art studies. He is one of the most important painters of the last fifty years and represented West Germany at the Venice Biennale in 1972.
