Alicia
Paz

Alicia Paz, born in Mexico in 1967, is a French and Mexican artist. She graduated from U.C. Berkeley, ENSBA in Paris, Goldsmiths College, and Royal College of Art, London. She lives and work in London and teaches at the Camberwell College of Arts (University of the Arts, London).

Her work deals primarily with identity, cultural mixing, and explores the variations of subjectivity. She focuses on the female figure and describes it as an experienced Self, multiple, paradoxical and constantly changing. Inhabiting fantastical and exotic landscapes, her feminine subjects merge with organic life. Women become hybrid beings, monster-women, tree-women often involving the notion of filiation. Combining painting and collage, portrait and landscape, her work mixes references to art history with ones taken from advertising, comics or the applied and decorative arts, using these various registers as a vehicle for intertwining narratives.

Her latest solo show “Juntas” (Together) at the Maison de l’Amérique Latine is the third part of a wider research and production project supported by the Arts Council England. The first two exhibitions of this triptych are entitled “Río y Mar” (River and Sea) at the Beecroft Gallery (Southend-on-Sea, United Kingdom) and “River Makers”, currently presented at the 20-21 Visual Arts Center (North Lincolnshire, United Kingdom).

She recently exhibited her work at the Frac Ile de France/Château de Rentilly, as part of the group exhibition “Le Cabaret du Néant” (2020). She was also part of “Life Stories” (2021), a group exhibition at Chatsworth House (Derbyshire, United Kingdom).

Paz has participated in several collective shows including the very much noticed French exhibition “Tous, des sang-mêlés” in 2017 at the MAC VAL (Vitry-sur-Seine, France), “Heute. Spektrum. Malereï” at the Kunstmuseum Magdeburg (Germany, 2012) and “Slow Magic, Contemporary Approaches to Painting” at the Bluecoat Gallery (Liverpool, United Kingdom, 2009). More recent solo shows include one at the Museo Leonora Carrington in San Luis Potosí (Mexico, 2019) and another at Kunstmuseum Magdeburg (Germany, 2016). Earlier solo projects include an exhibit at the Dukan Gallery in Leipzig (Germany, 2014), one at the Mexican Cultural Institute in Paris (France, 2013) and a semi-retrospective exhibit of her work at the L.A.C. Sigean in collaboration with the Frac Occitanie (Montpellier, France, 2010).
