Bringing together works produced mainly between the 1980s and today, Le monde comme il va reveals the artists’ acute awareness of the present. This exhibition takes us back to the turbulence and jolts of the present. Everywhere, stable landmarks and references falter and slip away. The title is borrowed from a philosophical tale by Voltaire, in which a celestial envoy sets out to observe the behaviour of men whose gods no longer know whether they deserve to exist or should be annihilated in order to start a better civilization. Confronted with human paradoxes and hesitation, the narrator finally decides to let “the world go as it goes”, entrusting men with the task of taking their destiny back into their own hands.
The works from the Pinault Collection chosen for this exhibition bear witness to this moment of uncertainty, but they are also forces that draw the visitor into the momentum of this sphere that continues to turn, willy-nilly, and in whose movements we are collectively writing history.
With works by Maurizio Cattelan, Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas, Fischli & Weiss, General Idea, Robert Gober, Damien Hirst, Anne Imhof, Kimsooja, Martin Kippenberger, Kiki Kogelnik, Jeff Koons, Bertrand Lavier, Liu Wei, Goshka Macuga, Sigmar Polke, Doris Salcedo, Mohammed Sami, Cindy Sherman, Sturtevant, Sun Yuan & Peng Yu, Pol Taburet, Wolfgang Tillmans, Salman Toor, Rosemarie Trockel, Luc Tuymans, Frank Walter, Franz West, Christopher Wool.
