Mohamed Bourouissa was born in Blida (Algeria) in 1978. He lives and works in Gennevilliers. His composite work, initially oriented towards photography and video, also includes drawing and live performance, forming living representations. As an observer of events and dialogues that he later replays and reinterprets, the artist collects the faces of his time to suggest fragmented images of reality. He proceeds in stages, each constituting a further version of his evolving projects - through exhibitions, installations and performances, embodied in a variety of media - and part of a more global anthropological process. Eminently political but never taking a stand, his work points to the violence of exclusion, social tensions and contracting fissures. As interested in collective relations as in the geometry of the image, his works draw directly on the sources of classical painting, from Boticelli to Piero della Francesca, via Delacroix.
Mohamed Bourouissa's graphic practice, to which LaM devotes a large part of the monographic exhibition, reveals more specifically the genesis of his projects by showing the way in which he conceives, carries out and stages them.
Alongside life sketches, preparatory drawings and film storyboards there are more abstract inks and watercolours: a full-length figure, a face, a detail of a body made up of stains ranging from violet to brown and mimosa yellow. The associated limited edition is an ultrachrome inkjet print produced as part of a collaboration between Éditions Dilecta and LaM to coincide with the artist's exhibition "Attracteur étrange" (September 2023 - January 2024).
