The last series of the artist, entitled “Crossfade”, is named after the cinematographic technique which consists in the superimposition of two shots in order to obtain a progressive transition between two images. This technique, by reducing the brightness of a picture while reducing another’s, helps to connect two situations, two frames. Combining details of landscapes taken from Carleton Watkins’ photos and from paintings by Thomas Cole, Nicolas Dhervillers uses again light to reveal and stage the image in order to produce a visual dramaturgy –further developing the approach of the “Remake” series. Almost proceeding by collage, the artist builds his images as a filmmaker would do, concerned both by the lightning and the setting, in order to create supernatural and eerie landscapes.
