Xie Lei, born in 1983 in Huainan (China), lives and works in Paris (France). Most of his paintings refer to murky and disturbing situations which call out to the viewer but, in a subtle and intriguing way, also slow down the gaze by presenting moments of latency and another perception of time. Xie Lei wants to restore the mystery of painting: suggesting without saying, revealing what is hidden. It is this in- between, this state between “dog and wolf” as the French saying states, that he finds fascinating. And the tension, the duality, the anxiety and the joy ensuing.
He is represented by the Meessen de Clercq gallery in Brussels and by the galerie Sémiose in Paris.
