Nicolas
Dhervillers

First known for his photographs, Nicolas Dhervillers experimented for years on his works on paper which now hold a major position in his ongoing practice: pastel, graphite, charcoal and photographic’s transfer are so many techniques which allow him to depict variations of cloudy and evanescent landscapes drawn from 19th century painting and photography, from Turner to Constable and Ivan Aïvasovski. Quotation, interpretation and appropriation of references allow him to blur the lines between drawing and photography and to further his experiments.

After graduating from the university Paris 8 with a Master in photography and multimedia, he first found recognition thanks to a commission from the Centre Pompidou-Metz in 2009. In 2011, he was invited in Switzerland for a six month residency which led to a solo show organized by the art center La Ferme-Asile. In 2012, he took part in Mono, an event associated with documenta 13 (Kassel). On this occasion, the art center Volklinger Hütte helped produce and consequently presented his series entitled Behind the Future. In 2014, he had his own solo show in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag (Netherlands). In 2015, he participated in the Ballarat International Foto Biennale in Australia and in the Triennale of Photography and Architecture in Brussels . That same year, he created the Memory Drift project, a series of drawings and monumental paintings connected to his photographic practice and a series of dry pastels called Remake based on details taken from skies from the greatest masters of painting.

In 2019, Nicolas Dhervillers was exhibited in États d’âmes, esprit des lieux: Photographies de la collection Lazare at the Musée des Beaux- Arts de Montréal (Canada); in the Grandes Serres de Pantin during the Nuit Blanche event in the show Jardinons les possibles (curated by Isabelle de Maison Rouge and Ingrid Pux). In 2021, two solo shows were dedicated to his practice, one at the CAC Passages de Troyes and the other at the galerie Prouvost Hacker (Lille). In 2022, he will present his works for a solo show at our gallery and at the contemporary art center Le Mur (Moret-Loings-et-Orvanne).

He is represented by the School Gallery (Paris) and the galerie Prouvost Hacker (Lille).
